Sarah Wheeler

Lower Elementary Head Teacher

I was drawn to Montessori philosophy because of the deep respect it shows for children as capable, curious individuals and the way it encourages independence, self sufficiency, purposeful work, and a genuine love of learning. I was especially drawn to Acorn Montessori School because of its homey, welcoming feel and because the children I observed seemed peaceful, happy, and truly at ease in their classroom community. What I love most about working with children is witnessing their confidence grow as they discover their abilities, solve problems, and begin to trust themselves as learners. Outside of my role at Acorn, I enjoy traveling, spending time in nature, exercising, as well as cooking and baking (let me know if you’d like some sourdough starter!). In addition to my role at Acorn, I work at West Side Montessori School Teacher Education Program as a Teacher Educator and as the coordinator for their Professional Development series. I have two favorite quotes by Dr. Maria Montessori, they are: “The child is both a hope and a promise for mankind.” It reminds me that every child has incredible potential, and nurturing curiosity, confidence, and compassion in the classroom contributes not only to their growth but to a better world. “The greatest sign of success for a teacher is to be able to say, ‘The children are now working as if I did not exist,’” because it reflects my belief that when a classroom is thoughtfully prepared, children are free to follow their curiosity and joyfully construct their own understanding of the world. When the seeds are planted mindfully, the potential for growth is limitless!
